Two people are dead in Springfield in a day of violence. A 23-year-old Springfield man was fatally shot in the Forest Park neighborhood and a 33 year old man on Avon Place was also killed.

Police said Darrell Jenkins was dead at the scene of the 12:45 a.m. Wednesday shooting on Kensington Avenue. The 20-year-old woman was shot in the mouth and collapsed nearby after trying to run away. She is hospitalized but expected to survive. Police say the shootings are connected to gangs, but the victims weren't gang members. Police have not identified the dead man in the second case. There are now five murders in the city of Springfield.

Police spokesman Sgt. John Delaney said the attacks aren't random but they plan to increase patrols.
