The dream of a casino in Palmer is dead. Voters by less than a hundred votes have killed a measure that would have allowed Mohegan Sun to build a billion dollar casino in town. The vote kills the plan for the town and makes Springfield the only community in western Mass to have voted for a casino proposal. However, it is very unclear what the next step is. It had always been assumed that the commission would have to decide between Springfield and Palmer. But, now the commission could either award the franchise to Springfield by default or reopen the bidding and application process. If that happens that would reopen the issue to Westfield, Holyoke and Chicopee.
