Sheriff's Department Investigating Dog Incident At Christmas Party

An incident involving a Springfield police dog is being investigated.

There are differing accounts about exactly what happened, but the German Shepherd, named Mango, reportedly either bit or scratched a young child at the Springfield Police C3 Forest Park Christmas Party on Saturday.

The Springfield Police Department said Mango was trained to be a K-9 officer but wound up being given the job of crisis intervention dog.

Officials say the dog will not be euthanized regardless of what the investigation concludes.

The Hampden County Sheriff's Office is independently investigating.
