Sarno: Tougher Penalties May Reduce Sleepless Nights

Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno is seeking to stiffen penalties for using illegal fireworks.

The mayor's office says existing penalties haven't stopped the use of fireworks and that residents complain it's impacting their quality of life.

The Mayor says people can't sleep with the illegal fireworks going off at all hours of the day and night.

Sarno is going to submit legislation to increase penalties including allowing for a person's vehicle to be immobilized for long-delinquent fireworks possession violations.

The issue is coming up before the Springfield City Council on July 20th. If it passes the Home Rule Petition will be sent to the legislature for legislative approval.
