Legislation Would Set New Tax To Help Quabbin

Two western Massachusetts lawmakers have filed legislation to reimburse the towns that surround the Quabbin Reservoir, the primary water source for Greater Boston.

The proposal from state Senator Jo Comerford and Representative Aaron Saunders would set an excise tax of five cents per one-thousand gallons.

Comerford says the towns that steward the water from the nearly-century-old Quabbin have received an inadequate amount of compensation.

The bill was considered by the Joint Committee on Environment and Natural Resources on Wednesday.

No indication as to when they will report the bill out of committee.
