Governor Maura Healey is not supporting a ballot initiative that seeks to remove the MCAS exam requirement for high school graduation.

The state's largest teachers union is supporting the repeal of the MCAS mandate.

Healey says the MCAS exams are an important way of tracking the progress of Massachusetts children in state schools.

It's expected that a loud and expensive battle will be waged by both sides of the issue if the question reaches state ballots in November.
