Researchers at UMass Amherst have detected the Powassan virus in parts of Massachusetts.

Through real-time testing, the virus was discovered during a tick survey.

Named after a town in Ontario, Canada where the first case was confirmed, Powassan virus symptoms include fever, headache, vomiting, and weakness, but this is not so in every case.

Severe infection may lead to brain infection and meningitis, which can be fatal. Massachusetts recorded ten human cases of Powassan virus in 2023, with 44 confirmed nationwide.

Scientists say people should cover their skin, and use insect repellent that includes DEET when outside.

They should also check their bodies, those of their children, and pets after returning home.
