City officials say a Springfield church planning to be a sanctuary for those facing deportation is not in compliance with state building codes.
A letter released by Mayor Domenic Sarno today outlines what needs to be done to meet code requirements.
Earlier this month a group of religious leaders announced plans to shelter people in danger of being deported at the South Congregational Church.
According to his office, the mayor is opposed to using the church as a sanctuary for people living in the U.S. illegally.
Meantime officials of the South Congregational Church say they will continue to work toward housing the immigrants at the facility.
