Western Massachusetts could be the site of a new plant that would convert trash into renewable energy.
Denmark-based DONG Energy is considering a half-dozen sites in the area for an 80-million-dollar waste management plant, including five in Chicopee.
City officials say the closing of the privately-owned Chicopee Sanitary Landfill is a factor.
DONG opened its first large-scale plant in the United Kingdom earlier this year and is also working on a wind energy project off of Martha's Vineyard.
