Officials in Northampton are continuing to discuss the potential placement of additional surveillance cameras downtown.
The City Council voted Thursday to refer a resolution that opposes the placement of the cameras to a committee, as well as an ordinance authorizing the devices.
Some residents are in opposition, saying the cameras won't make the city safer like Police Chief Jody Kasper has claimed, and that there is the potential for misuse by police.
Some others in attendance at Thursday's City Council meeting supported the cameras, saying they could be an important tool to help solve murder cases.
