The state of Massachusetts is paying for a major Springfield public works project.
Governor Charlie Baker and other state officials announced during a visit to the city on Thursday that the commonwealth will pick up a three-million-dollar tab to repair the Swan Pond Culvert at the main entrance of Forest Park.
The main entrance was closed this past summer temporarily after the collapse of the 19th-century culvert, which officials are concerned could cause the roadway to fail or be washed out at some point.
City officials expect to begin searching for an engineering firm for the project soon.
