The mayors of Boston, Worcester; Providence, Rhode Island; and Hartford, Connecticut, announced today there is a regional gun buyback in their communities and dozens of others today.
The coordinated effort is the first of its kind in the nation.
There are several drop-off locations in Boston and in communities throughout the Greater Worcester area.
Local Police Departments say the issue is an important one since when they go to house break cases in the state, the first thing they ask is whether or not any guns were taken.
The regional buyback is being held in remembrance of the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, which happened five years ago.
