New details are out regarding the fatal apartment fire in Springfield on Sunday.
An imam at the Islamic Center of Western Massachusetts says Aden Abdakadr went back into the burning building on Belmont Avenue to save his two children.
Abdakadr, a two-year-old and a one-year-old perished, but Abdakadr's pregnant wife escaped.
As the investigation into the blaze continues, authorities note the apartment did not have a sprinkler system in place, but it was not required to have one due to the age of the building.
Only buildings where new construction is being done is required to include sprinkler systems.
Meantime, the Springfield Fire Commissioner BJ Calvi says that they now know why the fire spread so quickly.
As people were leaving the building in the midst of the fire, there was a door that was left open to one of the apartments and that allowed wind to circulate through feeding the fire and intensifying it.
