The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court is deciding if former Belchertown District Court Chief Justice Thomas Estes should be indefinitely suspended.
A state commission made that recommendation after Estes previously admitted to having sex with a court employee in the courtroom.
A hearing was held in Boston on Tuesday.
Under state law, only the legislature and Governor Charlie Baker have the power to remove Estes.
The Governor has indicated that he would support the removal of the judge.
