Western Massachusetts officials are reacting to the death of a firefighter in Worcester.
Christopher Roy was battling a five-alarm blaze on Sunday when he became trapped.
In a statement, Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno expressed sympathy, thoughts, prayers and encouragement on behalf of Fire Commissioner B.J. Calvi and the rest of the city.
Congressman Jim McGovern, who represents Worcester, said he was deeply saddened to learn of Roy's death, and noted December is already a difficult month for the Worcester Fire Department because of previous tragedies.
Worcester has endured several deadly fires over the last 20 years.
It was 19 years ago this month that six Worcester Firefighters died in a massive warehouse fire.
In 2011, Firefighter Jon Davies died while searching for victims in a December 8th fire.
Funeral arrangements have not been announced for Roy, who was 36 and leaves a 9 year old daughter among others.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
