It appears that the Springfield City Council is signalling that it may be ready to make another attempt at a strong Police Commission.
Springfield had a strong commission setup decades ago but it was dismantled when the city fell on tough financial times and a Control Board gave complete control of the department to a commissioner.
Some city councilors have suggested that a return to the old system would be fairer to everyone and give the public and better sense of equity within the entire system.
The new Springfield City Council President Justin Hurst says that he would like to see the return of the Commission and he is willing to work with Mayor Dom Sarno to try to make that happen.
The issue has come up from time to time throughout the years but the Mayor has routinely dismissed the request.
