The state Department of Higher Education is increasing its oversight of private colleges.
The department is set to create a new monitoring system to track the financial health of private colleges.
The move comes after the sudden closure of Mount Ida College in Newton last spring, which came two months before graduation.
Mount Ida had few plans for students to finish their degrees, and had accepted deposits from an incoming freshman class.
UMass Amherst officials have not commented on the departmental plans. They took over the college.
