Officer Attacked-- Home Now And In Good Spirits

Springfield Police Commissioner Cheryl Clapprood says that Officer Greg Vatrano is expected to be out of service for about six weeks recovering from injuries sustained in a violent struggle with a suspect.

Vatrano suffered a broken hand and cuts and bruises after being stabbed in the trauma plate he was wearing on Wednesday night.

The suspect, Reuben Barrero, Jr., (pictured below) faces charges including attempt to murder and arson.

An attorney for Barrero requested a mental health exam for his client in Springfield District Court on Thursday, where a judge ordered him to be held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing.

He is expected back in court later today.

Meantime, the officer is the cousin of the Mayor and the brother of former Boston Bruin and current Florida Panther Frank Vatrano.

Vatrano was in San Jose for a game Thursday night where he scored a goal.

He did not speak to reporters.
