The Boston City Council on Wednesday unanimously approved a resolution of support for an east-west high-speed rail connection to Springfield.
City councilor Matt O'Malley, who introduced the resolution, said the service could be transformative for both cities.
The resolution notes that Boston deals with high housing prices and traffic congestion, while Springfield is struggling with declining population, employment and housing demand.
MassDOT is conducting a feasibility study of the high-speed link.
They are expected to conclude their study either late this year or early next.
