Pentagon Redirecting $3.6 Billion In Funding For Border Wall Construction

Border Wall

The Pentagon announced that it plans to divert $3.6 billion in funding to pay for construction of a wall along sections of the U.S.-Mexico border. Officials say the money will come from 127 projects and about half of the money will be pulled from international projects, while the other half will come from domestic projects. The Pentagon did not release the specific projects that will be cut but said none of the ones scheduled to begin in 2019 are on the chopping block.

Officials say construction on the border will begin before the end of the year. The construction will focus on repairing and extending the border wall in 11 sections across Texas, Arizona, and California.

Democrats blasted the announcement while the ACLU announced that it plans to file a lawsuit to block to funds from being used to build the wall.

"The fact that the government sat on these so-called 'emergency funds' for seven months further confirms that this is nothing but an unlawful power grab. We'll be back in court very soon to block Trump's latest effort to raid military funds for his xenophobic wall," Dror Ladin, staff attorney with the ACLU's National Security Project, said in a statement.
