Proposal Would Prevent Sanctuary State

There's a petition for a law to prevent Massachusetts from becoming a sanctuary state being promoted by Cape and Islands District Attorney Michael O'Keefe.

The petition was certified this week by the state attorney general.

The law would provide new authority to state and local law enforcement to detain someone who would otherwise be transferred to federal immigration officials if they are deportation subjects or are a public safety threat.

The A.G.'s office says the decision to certify does not represent support or opposition.
