21-Year-Old Man Dies After Lexus Remotely Starts, Pins Him Between Two Cars

Michael Kosanovich

A 21-year-old New Jersey man died in a freak accident in Queens, New York. Michael Kosanovich was standing between two parked 2002 Lexus IS300s when one of them was remotely started and lurched forward, trapping him between the two vehicles.

Bystanders rushed to Kosanovich's aid and tried to free him. While they managed to pull the Lexus back, it rolled forward and crushed him between the cars again.

When the police arrived at the scene, they managed to unpin Kosanovich and he was rushed to the hospital with trauma to his legs and torso. Doctors were unable to save him and he died the following day.

There have been no arrests in the case and authorities are continuing to investigate the incident. They have not said why the car moved forward when the remote start system was activated.

Toyota Motor North America, which owns Lexus, issued a statement offering their condolences to the family and said that they did not offer remote starters in the 2002 IS300.

"Our deepest sympathy goes out to the family and friends of Michael Kosanovich. Although many details are unknown at this time, we have reached out to local law enforcement to offer support in the investigation."
