Ramos: Technology Not Ready For Widespread Use

A motion to ban facial recognition technology passed an initial vote by the Springfield City Council on Monday.

The vote from the council was 9-to-2. Members say the technology is inaccurate and can cause discrimination against minorities.

Springfield would join Northampton and other Massachusetts municipalities, including Somerville and Brookline, if the ban passes.

City Councilor Orlando Ramos says that the technology is not ready to be used either in this city or in the nation.
