The Massachusetts Department of Transportation on Thursday in Springfield provided details on how much it would cost for Boston-to-Western Massachusetts regular rail service.
At the lower end, MassDOT said it would cost two-billion dollars for new service from Springfield to Worcester, where passengers would transfer to get to Boston.
On the higher-end, another of the half-dozen options presented yesterday carried a 25-billion-dollar price tag to overhaul existing rail and offer electrified rail service up to 150 miles per hour.
That would make a ride from Springfield to Boston possible in one hour and 19 minutes.
MassDOT plans to whittle down the alternatives list to three.
