Plea Deal For Man Charged In Fatal Bus Stop Accident

A Belchertown man is being given a five-year jail term for a fatal crash in Amherst.

Peter Sheremeta entered into a plea deal in Hampshire Superior Court on Tuesday on charges including DUI and driving to endanger for the crash at a downtown bus stop in 2016 which killed a man waiting at the stop, William Wanczyk of Northampton.

As part of the plea deal, charges including manslaughter were dropped, according to the Northwestern District Attorney's Office, which says it would have been difficult to prove Sheremeta was actually driving at the time of the crash.

He'll get credit for about two years already served.
