Death Toll Increases- Governor Calls Numbers "Staggering"

The Massachusetts Governor says the numbers of fatal cases of Covid 19 are staggering. There are now 51 thousand confirmed cases of the virus statewide. 2,556 people who have died. 215 thousand of the state’s nearly 8 million people have been tested for the virus.

Hampden County has the highest number of coronavirus cases in western Massachusetts with over 3,060 as of Saturday morning.. According to data from the state Department of Public Health, Berkshire County has the second highest number in the region with 425. There were 217 confirmed cases in Franklin County and 396 in Hampshire County.

Springfield has recorded 1, 026 confirmed cases of the virus.

In Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont reports 1,764 people who have died from the virus. Of the border communities to Massachusetts, Enfield reports 260 cases to date. Stafford 71. Somers 62 and Suffield 83. The border communities reports are important to The Commonwealth because of the travel between residents of western Mass and northern Connecticut.

A mandatory face covering order is taking effect in Holyoke at 12:01 a.m. on Sunday. All residents must wear a cloth face covering when they leave home, and essential businesses must provide a mask or face covering for all employees.
