Bill Calls For Longer Pre Trial Detentions For Defendants

Governor Charlie Baker's administration wants to make it easier to hold people charged with violent crimes without bail.

An administration bill would allow prosecutors to ask that defendants be held indefinitely as their cases are pending.

Current law limits the time a defendant is held without bail to 180 days in Superior Court.

It is one of the measures that Springfield Mayor Dom Sarno has lobbied for over the last several years.

Administration officials cite a recent case where an accused rapist allegedly committed another sex assault after he was bailed out by a nonprofit group.
