Springfield Thunderbirds Opt Out For One Season Due To Pandemic

There will be no American Hockey League play in Springfield this year.

The American Hockey League announced this afternoon that it would play a 2020-2021 season with 28 teams, but the Springfield Thunderbirds will not be one of them.

The AHL gave teams the chance to opt out of the season because of the Covid19 pandemic.

Four teams were granted provisional relocations because of the pandemic.

One of those teams, the Providence Bruins will play in Marlborough Mass.

Besides the Thunderbirds, the Charlotte Checkers, and Milwaukee Admirals have opted out.

The League play will begin on February 5th.
