City Council Challenges Mayoral Authority On Police

A judge is deciding whether to allow the Springfield City Council to bring back the city's police commission.

Arguments were heard Tuesday in Hampden Superior Court in a lawsuit filed by the City Council against Mayor Domenic Sarno.

Despite the council overriding the mayor's veto of the ordinance to create the commission, he has not acted to appoint members.

Sarno argues he has the right to appoint a police commissioner.

The city's police commission was abolished in 2005.

There is no indication when the judge will rule.
