Thousands Could Ask For New Trial In Western Mass Courts

Thousands of Western Massachusetts residents with drunk-driving convictions are being notified that they can challenge their cases.

Notifications are going out from district attorney offices to people who were convicted between 2011 and 2018 that they may be able to seek a new trial based on unreliable breathalyzer results.

Usage of breathalyzer evidence has resumed since a judge's order to improve the reliability was carried out.

Officials say there are a few more than 21 hundred people who have been notified in Hampden County alone.

Overall more than 27 thousand people have been contacted.
