Federal Trial Begins For Suspended Springfield Narcotics Detective

The Springfield Federal Trial of a suspended police detective for civil rights violations is underway.

Prosecutors say Gregg Bigda assaulted a juvenile who was in handcuffs and participated in a threatening interrogation in 2016 after the juvenile and two others stole an undercover vehicle and took it on a joyride nearly 6 years ago.

Bigda was part of the Springfield Police Department's narcotics unit, which the Justice Department determined was involved in a regular pattern of excessive force.

The narcotics bureau was replaced by a firearms investigation unit earlier this year. It is unclear whether the veteran narcotics detective will take the stand in his own defense.
