Commissioner Harris: City Faces Crisis With Covid Cases So High

The Springfield Health Commissioner says the city is in a crisis.

Helen Caulton Harris says we won't know for about two more weeks whether or not the Christmas Holiday spiked the overall number of covid cases in the city.

But she says even without that in the equation - the city is in crisis mode.

In late November - the city had roughly 377 cases of the coronavirus.

But we have seen that number increase over the last couple of weeks.

More than 800 cases right after Thanksgiving.

In the most current numbers, the commissioner says the city saw 1132 new positive covid tests and last week was a short week.

She is hoping that the trends change particularly with the New Year's Eve celebrations days away.

Meantime, more people getting tested as long lines are reported across the city. Officials say they are going to provide some At Home Covid Test kits - while they last at city libraries Tuesday and Wednesday.
