Mayor: Police Shooting Of Suspect Was Justified

One person is dead after they were shot by a police officer in Springfield on Sunday.

The Springfield Police Department says authorities were looking for someone who allegedly pulled a knife on a victim at around 8:30 a.m.

They located the suspect on Genesse Street.

Mayor Dom Sarno says that police ordered the suspect to put down the knife that he had.

Reports indicate the adult male stabbed an officer in the face, who then fatally shot him.

That officer was taken to Baystate Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, according to the Springfield PD, which is investigating the shooting along with the Hampden District Attorney.

No names have been released.
