State Senate To Vote On Governor's Veto Of Driver's License Bill

The state House has voted to override Governor Charlie Baker's veto of a bill that would allow some illegal immigrants to obtain state driver's licenses.

The House vote yesterday was 119 to 36, with all 28 Republicans and eight Democrats voting no.

The override effort now shifts to the Senate, which could take the matter up as early as today.

It appears that State Senator John Velis will be voting to sustain the governor's veto. The Senator contends that the track record of the Registry of Motor Vehicles to deal with examining records isn't good and the state is providing no money as part of the program to improve things.

The bill would allow illegal immigrants to obtain a driver's license if they provide two documents proving their identity and date of birth.
