Hall Of Famer Referee Hugh Evans Passes Away

A Hall of Fame basketball referee has died. Hugh Evans was 78.

Evans was inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame this year.

Hoop Hall president John Doleva says Evans was the first NBA official from a historically-black college or university.

“Hugh was a trailblazer; in 1972, he became the first NBA Official from an HBCU, coming from North Carolina A&T University. He was also known for holding himself and other Officials to the highest standard. The game is in a better place for having had him involved as an Official and later as a Supervisor of Officials for 30 years.”

Doleva says the game is in a better place for having had Evans involved as an official, and later as a supervisor of officials, for thirty years. Evans reffed nearly two-thousand regular-season games and 35 NBA Finals contests.
