State Ready For Sports Betting- But Some Are Left Out

The Massachusetts Legislature has reached an agreement on sports-betting.

Lawmakers are sending a proposal to Governor Charlie Baker's desk which would legalize betting on professional and college sports at casinos and other places.

MGM Springfield president Chris Kelley expressed enthusiasm about the move in a statement on Monday.

He said the new industry will allow Massachusetts to recover revenue and jobs that are currently being lost to neighboring states.

The current measure leaves out for now smaller restaurants and bars. That is something that was being pushed by Springfield State Rep Orlando Ramos. The idea has been rejected for now by the legislature. But they are expected to name a commission to determine how best to make it happen in communities across the state. The commission would report back by the end of the year.

Sports-betting has been legalized in the New England states of Connecticut, New Hampshire and Rhode Island.'
