Retired Westfield police officer Brian Fanion was sentenced to life in prison on Wednesday for first-degree murder.
Fanion was found guilty of killing his wife, Amy Fanion, in 2018.
The defense argued it was a suicide, but the prosecution said Brian Fanion had a clear motive because he was having an affair and did not want to share his pension in a divorce settlement.
Hampden District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni stated, “Mr. Fanion’s behavior was calculating and shockingly cruel. I commend the members of the jury who saw through his defense and held him accountable. This result illustrates that no matter your position or power, justice is blind. I thank our entire team, especially Assistant District Attorney Mary Sandstrom for her phenomenal efforts and commitment to justice for Amy.”
The first-degree murder conviction carries with it no chance for parole.
