Firefighter Disability Will Include Hypertension And Heart Conditions

Governor Dan McKee has allowed controversial legislation affecting firefighter disability pensions to become law without his signature.

The law guarantees disability pensions, paying two-thirds pay, tax-free for life, to firefighters with hypertension and heart conditions.

McKee's predecessor, Gina Raimondo, vetoed similar legislation in 2017.

McKee was urged to take the same action by a coalition including town managers from across the state.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, the former mayor of Cumberland McKee said municipal leaders could have made a stronger case, and he added that the bill passed by the General Assembly was veto-proof.
