Gun manufacturer Smith and Wesson has suspended some employees at the Springfield plant because they may not legally be allowed to possess guns.

In a statement, the company says the workers were suspended after the ATF told them the workers may be restricted from handling firearms.

Smith and Wesson says it has a strict policy that prohibits people who cannot possess firearms from working in its facilities.

The company says it does as much due diligence as it can, but state and federal employment and privacy laws limit which background checks it can run.
