Five people were injured after their sports utility vehicle crashed into a geyser at Yellowstone National Park on Thursday (July 11) morning. The National Park Service said that the driver inadvertently left the road and drove into the Semi-Centennial Geyser, an acidic thermal feature with a water temperature of around 105 degrees. It is located between Mammoth Hot Springs and Norris Junction near Roaring Mountain.
The five occupants of the vehicle managed to get out of the car on their own before it sank nine feet to the bottom of the thermal feature. They were all transported to the hospital with injuries that were not considered to be life-threatening.
On Friday, officials shut down the roadway for about two hours while crews worked to pull the vehicle out of the geyser.
Officials said the incident remains under investigation. No information was released about what caused the driver to leave the roadway.
