Political leaders in Western Massachusetts are urging action at a controversial railroad crossing in Longmeadow.
The crossing at Tina Lane and Birnie Road is where Department of Public Works foreman Warren Cowles was killed by a train in March, while he was in a town truck.
U.S. Senators Ed Markey and Elizabeth Warren, along with Congressman Richard Neal, penned a letter to the president of Amtrak on Tuesday asking Amtrak to confirm the crossing is public, and approve plans for safety equipment, after they say the Federal Highway Administration approved almost three-quarters of a million dollars in federal aid last month to pay for the new equipment.
