Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno is announcing he'll once again allow the city's Community Police Hearing Board to recommend specific discipline against officers who have committed misconduct.
The board had been able to make such recommendations since its establishment in 2010 up until last year, when Sarno stripped the board of that capacity.
Final discipline will still be left to the controls of Police Commissioner John Barbieri, but Sarno said in a news release on Thursday the reversal back to the original rule allows for more civilian input into police wrongdoing.
