Annual Report: More Outreach Needed To Community

The Springfield  Community Police Hearing Board is releasing its annual report for  2017.

The police department received about 280-thousand calls for  service last year, up almost one-thousand from 2013.

There were  four-thousand-405 arrests made last year, almost identical to the number  of arrests in 2016 but up several hundred from previous years.

Eighty-one complaints were filed by citizens and reviewed by the hearing  board, including 36 for use of force.

The report concludes that the department needs to do more outreach with the community as well as using video recordings during arrests.  That is something that has been visited during contract negotiations which are currently on the table.
