Committee Gets Rundown On Revamped Police Commission

A proposal to overhaul aspects of the Springfield Police Department is being considered by the city council.

The proposal from Mayor Domenic Sarno and Acting Police Commissioner Cheryl Clapprood from earlier this month would replace the city's Community Police Hearing Board with a Civilian Review Board and give it the ability to issue subpoenas, plus it would keep the police commissioner position in place.

The city council has advocated for years to replace the commissioner with a civilian commissioner board.

A Public Safety Committee meeting was held to discuss the matter on Thursday, and the full council is expected to take it up on Monday.
