Auditor Says No To Privatizing College Bookstore

Massachusetts Auditor Suzanne Bump is denying a proposal to privatize the Holyoke Community College bookstore.

Bump says the proposal lacks required elements like minimum wage and health insurance benefits for the contract workers and an offer of jobs to qualified existing store staff.

Bump's office says HCC can resubmit a revised proposal that addresses the issues.

A spokesperson for the college expressed disappointment in the decision, noting the struggle colleges and universities are dealing with to try to reduce higher education costs.
