Twenty-three communities, including several in western Massachusetts, are getting money from the state's Complete Streets Funding Program.
The five-and-a-half-million-dollars will be used for transportation infrastructure improvement projects.
Among the recipients, Easthampton, Greenfield, Lenox, Longmeadow and Springfield.
Governor Charlie Baker says the goal is to ensure the state's infrastructure works for everyone, whether they are driving, cycling, walking or using public transit.
In some communities bike lanes will be expanded, while in others sidewalks and other infrastructure will be improved.
