A gas leak forced the evacuation of more than 20 houses in Springfield on Sunday.
Neighbors reportedly notified police about a strong smell of natural gas at a house on Brunswick Street in the city's Forest Park section.
The Springfield Police Department says someone stealing copper pipes from a vacant home may have caused the problem.
The residents have since been allowed to return to their homes.
