The Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities is ordering National Grid crews to halt work in Woburn.
That means hundreds of area properties had their gas shut off.
The safety practice was put in place after excess gas was introduced into the system shortly before noon yesterday, causing a potential pressurization issue.
National Grid technicians will be going door-to-door to turn off meters and make assessments before gas is turned back on. Gas re-lights began late yesterday evening, and will continue this morning.
