MassDOT is paying for safety upgrades at a railroad crossing in Longmeadow where five people have died since 1975.
Most recently, a public works employee was killed in a collision with a train at the crossing in March of 2017.
About seven-hundred-thousand dollars from the transportation department will cover the majority of the cost to install gates and warning lights.
Amtrak, which owns the rail line, will pay for the remainder.
It is unclear when specifically the construction will begin.
