Springfield Congressman Richard Neal is focusing on President Trump in anticipation of being named the new House Ways and Means Committee chair.
Neal told reporters that he plans to ask Trump to release his tax returns if he is named to the position, but that he hopes Trump will release the documents himself before a formal request is made.
Neal said the committee has the ability to make such requests, but that he assumed there would be a legal challenge.
Trump's tax returns have been the subject of scrutiny since the 2016 election, and he has so-far refused to release them.
Under federal law, both the President and Vice President are audited every year.
That provision came out of the Watergate era.
